IWC first introduced the Ingenieur Watch fifty years ago in 1955, which turned out a large success. The Ingenieur was based on a movement designed by an IWC engineer named Albert Pellaton. Intended to be a more conservative version of IWC's Mark XI Pilot’s Watch, The original design of the Ingenieur was elegant and understated. The Ingenieur Watch had a unique design that gave it powerful anti magnetic properties which help ensure the precision of the watch.

The famous IWC Ingenieur watch has been introduced in a commemorative, limited edition variant that pays tribute to a football legend. Presented in a series of 1,000 individual pieces, the IWC Ingenieur Automatic Edition Zinédine Zidane watch commemorates the vibrant career and exceptional skill and stamina of Zinédine Zidane. The Marseilles-born Zidane, who played for the clubs of Juventus Turin and Real Madrid obtained numerous titles, both national and international. Recognition for his outstanding accomplishments include three World Footballer of the Year awards, and the 1999 World Sportsman of the Year.

Today's Ingenieur line is very technical looking and futuristic, it's roots containing a very conservative demeanor with what can only be described as a "scientific twist." The IWC Vintage Ingenieur is a highly legible watch (its main function) with an emphasis on precision. Bold dagger hands contain a strip of luminant, while small points of luminant are located at the hour indicators around the perimeter of the watch along with smaller points for each of the 5 minute indicators. This usage of small points as minute indicators in conjunction with raised pointed hour markers is a hallmark of the IWC Ingenieur series,  and recaptured in the Vintage Ingenieur.

Like the Rolex Milgauss (also an anti-magnetic watch), the IWC Ingenieur has a slightly interesting seconds hand. Here with a small arrow on the tip for extra precision and to mimic the look of gauges and reading outputs from days of yore. While everything today is digital, there was a time when machines had analog gauges. Some of these gauges were modeled after watches, and a host of watches were modeled after such gauges. Inside the watch is an automatic movement, IWC Caliber 80111 with a modest power reserve of 44 hours, but this is a rugged movement. The first IWC Ingenieur also contained an automatic movement.

IWC re-launched the Ingenieur Watch at the 2005 SIHH in Geneva to the accolades of the entire Swiss Watch industry. This re-launch consisted of an expanded and updated line featuring the Ingenieur Automatic, Ingenieur Chronograph, Ingenieur Midsize, Ingenieur Automatic AMG, and the Ingenieur Chronograph AMG. The 2005 Ingenieur line has a distinctive mechanical look striking with the bezel. IWC designed a bezel with five recessed screw holes that look like something you would see inside a car engine. The dial design is clean, simple and very masculine. Except for the Ingenieur Midsize, the Ingenieur is only available with a black dial. Collectors can choose from either a steel (or titanium) bracelet or a synthetic rubber strap in black. 

The Ingenieur is a large watch measuring 42.5 mm for both the automatic and chrono versions. IWC targeted the auto enthusiast with the AMG version of the Ingenieur. This watch features its light titanium case and the red seconds hand and second markers on the dial.
